Lead Free Soldering Process Introduced

(July 26 2004)

Weymouth based contract electronics manufacturing company, Ultra Contact Electronics Manufacturing Services, has introduced a lead free soldering process following extensive trials.

Ultra Electronics CEMS focuses on manufacturing high reliability products in low to medium volumes for customers throughout the UK.

Neil Garbutt, Senior Engineer of Ultra Electronics commented, "Some of our customers' products operate in extreme working conditions, sometimes at temperatures in excess of 190deg C where traditional solders would be inappropriate. These applications demand the use of high melting point solders, which led us to develop our lead free processes.

Additionally as a company, Ultra Electronics Manufacturing Services are very aware of the RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) directive. We have for some time been preparing our strategy and project plan to ensure we are compliant with our responsibilities under this directive.

As a result, we have a well-developed lead free process with proven capabilities. Our trials have been extensive with lead free and we feel able to give our customers professional advice on materials, board finishes and the solders themselves."

Products assembled with lead free solders went into production in July 2004.
